What is Differential Privacy Technology?
Differential Privacy is a Privacy Enhancing Technology to protect privacy. It applies an irreversible blur effect (noise) to the statistics rendering them anonymized. It is considered the reference standard for privacy due to its mathematical proven guarantees.
Why use Differential Privacy?
Differential Privacy is the technology that overcomes the limitations of traditional anonymization techniques by
- Providing a quantification of the privacy protection level
- Providing utility information about the generated results upfront
- Upholding privacy guarantees despite the development of future de-anonymization attacks, even when powered by AI
Weakness of traditional anonymization
Traditional anonymization techniques are susceptible to de-anonymization attacks. Numerous instances demonstrate how anonymized datasets can be reconstructed by cross-referencing them with current or forthcoming public data (see examples). To address such attacks, organizations often generalize data to the extent that it becomes hard to link individuals. However, these generalizations are usually too coarse and severely reduce the utility of data insihgts.
